Estate Belvadere a unique property for visitors seeking an authentic and historic St. Croix vacation rental. It is built on an old sugar mill dating back to 1763. Here sugar cane was refined into precious sugar and the molasses into Cruzan rum.
The mill opens into an art gallery in the round (complete with the old Danish brick floor) and showcases a fine collection of Caribbean art and historic artefacts. Accommodating the curved walls of the sugar mill are the living area, gourmet kitchen and home office area, which open through doors onto an large patio overlooking the ocean.
There are 3 private suites with their own baths on the mill’s two floors. On the outside, a staircase winds up to the top of the mill to offer sweeping views in all directions.
The Estate features the ruins of a former plantation of long ago, and part of this area has been converted into a cozy patio to gather with family or just relax and read a book or two. These beautifully-preserved ruins include a classic Caribbean staircase and arches which are framed by verdant gardens, and provide a hands-on view into the quality Danish stone workmanship performed over 200 years ago.
One of the stone staircases leads to the Tower Building, a modern two-story pavilion with two large bedroom-bath suites. Each suite features a large living area, a full kitchen and two queen beds, and A/C. A bit further is the Garden Cottage, which was built as a new extension, though its entry patio incorporates some parts of the old stone walls. This suite offer total privacy and comes furnished with a small kitchen, a queen bedroom, and A/C.
The Estate’s grounds feature tall shady trees, fruit trees and numerous tropical gardens full of flowers, exotic plants, and green lawns. A large swimming pool and surrounding lawn are bordered by tropical trees and and bushes for provide total privacy.
Estate Belvedere is truly a masterpiece, blending rich Caribbean history and modern conveniences, as well as an important bookmark in St. Croix’s colorful history.
