Can you use your cell phone in St. Croix USVI?
Yes, most major US phone plans will work in St. Croix. However there are a few spots on the island where coverage is weak or non-existent, and cell data transfer speeds are much less than we’re used to on mainland US. LTE & 5G networks operate on St. Croix.
It’s also important to enable “WiFi Calling” on your cell phone BEFORE you leave home, which should allow you to route all your calls, text and data over any WiFi network on St. Croix. This is especially useful in parts of the island with weak or no coverage.

Does AT&T work in St. Croix US Virgin Islands?
AT&T sold their network assets to Liberty but ATT customers are allowed to roam free on Liberty under a continuation agreement. As long as you are connected to Liberty, you won’t be charged. However some USVI locations are very close to BVI islands, St. John in particular, so you might connect to a BVI carrier tower and get charged. So if you have AT&T, then limit the accessible network to Liberty.
As you can see below, they have very good coverage (the green area via their partner Liberty).
Real St. Croix Cell Phone Reception
Sometimes however the coverage is not what the phone companies promise, so luckily some serious researchers went around St. Croix island and actually measured Saint Croix cell signal strength and data rates in 2023. They published their results in a report called Cellular Coverage Mapping in the U.S. Virgin Islands (pdf).
Here’s a map of the the St. Croix cell phone reception & signal strength which they measured, and you can notice that it’s less than promised by the cell phone companies.
So in general, your cell phone will work in St. Croix even though there are some holes in coverage and much lower data transfer rates.
