- Vibe: relaxed, low-rise, family-friendly, more “condo resort” than big hotel
- Amenities: large pool, beach bar and grill, tennis and basketball courts, small putting or practice golf area, kids’ play area, clubhouse, and well-kept grounds
- Best for: families, couples, and repeat visitors who want quiet, easy access to the North Shore, and a base to explore the island
You can compare Gentle Winds condos and amenities to nearby rentals offering direct booking here or places to stay in Christiansted.
Before you go: what Gentle Winds is really like
Gentle Winds is not a hotel. It is a low-rise condo community with individually owned units, so the feel of your stay depends a bit on which condo you choose. Overall, the resort is quiet, with most guests splitting time between the large pool, the beach, and day trips around the island. The beach is usually calm enough for swimming, but in winter north swells you can get stronger surf and more wave noise at night.
Most visitors rent a car. Gentle Winds sits on the North Shore with nothing truly walkable beyond the beach and the on-site pool and courts. Groceries and restaurants are a short drive in either direction, but you should not plan on taxis or rideshares as your main transport.
If you prefer a busy resort with a full-service front desk, room service and nightly entertainment, Gentle Winds will feel too quiet. If you like space, a big pool, a natural beach and an easy base between Christiansted and Cane Bay, it is one of the better all-round locations on St Croix’s North Shore.
Gentle Winds condo rental options & price guide
Gentle Winds is a low-rise condo community with mainly two and three bedroom units. Each condo is individually owned, so prices vary by renovation level, view and how you book (direct vs. platform), but there are some clear patterns.
Typical condo layouts
- 2 bedroom / 2 bath condos – usually sleep 4–6 guests
- 3 bedroom units – usually sleep 6–8 guests and cost more per night
- Ground-floor units – easiest pool and beach access, a few steps from the lawn
- Upper-floor units – better ocean views and breezes, often a bit quieter
Typical nightly rates (rough guide)
Based on current listings for Gentle Winds and similar Christiansted condos:
- 2BR low season (late spring, summer, early fall): often around $230–$280 per night
- 2BR off-season (Sep–Oct): some units drop closer to $210–$240 per night
- 2BR high season (winter & holidays): commonly $300–$350+ per night
Owners of 3BR units usually price about 20–35% higher than comparable 2BRs, so it is realistic to see:
- 3BR low season: roughly $300–$380 per night
- 3BR high season: roughly $380–$450+ per night, depending on view, remodel level and reviews
These are not fixed quotes – they are typical ranges so you can sanity-check any offer you see online.
Typical extra charges
On top of the nightly rate, most Gentle Winds rentals also charge:
- Cleaning / housekeeping fee: commonly around $150–$250 per stay
(one published Gentle Winds rate sheet lists a $150 housekeeping charge for a 2BR condo) - USVI hotel tax: currently 12.5% of the room rate plus cleaning and any extra-guest fees
- Refundable damage deposit: often in the $300–$500 range
- Extra-guest fee: for parties above the base occupancy (for example, $20 per extra guest per night)
Always check the “price breakdown” before you book so you see the full cost, not just the headline nightly rate.
Platform service fees vs direct booking
If you book through VRBO or Airbnb, the platform adds a guest service fee, usually somewhere in the 6–15% range on top of the rental subtotal (nightly rate + cleaning and some other fees). That can easily add hundreds of dollars to a week-long stay.
To compare:
- Note the exact condo name, building and unit number on VRBO/Airbnb.
- Check whether the same owner or manager has a simple website or contact page for direct bookings.
- Ask for a written quote showing nightly rate + cleaning + tax with no platform service fee.
If you want to avoid these platform fees entirely, go to “How to book a vacation rental directly without extra booking fees”.
Where is Gentle Winds on St Croix?
Gentle Winds sits on St Croix’s North Shore, roughly halfway between Christiansted and Cane Bay. It is on a small point just west of Salt River Bay National Historical Park, with the condos arranged around a crescent beach and central pool.
- Christiansted town, boardwalk and marina: 15 minutes by car
- Cane Bay Beach and restaurants: 10 minutes by car
- Seaside Market, Cost-U-Less and other major groceries: about 10–15 minutes by car
- Airport / seaplane base: roughly 20 minutes depending on traffic
Gentle Winds amenities
As a condo resort, Gentle Winds feels more like a small neighborhood than a hotel. Amenities are for residents and registered guests only, but once you are staying on the property you can use everything on site.
- Large freshwater pool near the beach with shaded seating
- Sandy beach with loungers, thatched shade huts and hammocks
- Seasonal beach bar and grill serving burgers, salads, sandwiches and drinks when open
- Tennis and basketball courts
- Small putting or practice golf area
- Kids’ play area and open lawn
- Clubhouse and “great room” used for community events
- On-site staff and grounds crew keeping common areas tidy
Is Gentle Winds right for you?
Families
Families like the big pool, shallow beach entry and space to spread out. Kids can move between the pool, beach and play area without crossing roads, and many units have two or three bedrooms so groups are not squeezed into a standard hotel room.
Couples
Couples who like quiet evenings and ocean views do well here, especially in upper-floor units set slightly back from the pool. Gentle Winds is not a nightlife hub; most guests drive into Christiansted or Cane Bay for dinner, then come back to a quiet resort.
Divers & snorkelers
Divers use Gentle Winds as a base for North Shore dives at Cane Bay and boat trips from Salt Reiver and Christiansted. The beach itself is more sand than reef, but snorkeling improves toward the rocky points and at nearby Cane Bay Beach.
Gentle Winds is next to to Salt River National park, The Park offer super lookout views and there is kayaking in the mangrove and bioluminescent tours. Gentle Winds is also close to Cane Bay beach, which has great snorkeling and diving, plus a number of good restaurants which range from casual beach digs with live music all the way to to gourmet dining with wine and sunsets. Gentle Winds is a good base if you want a quiet resort between Christiansted and the North Shore beaches at Cane Bay and Salt River.

Gentle Winds FAQs (frequently asked questions)
Yes. Gentle Winds sits directly on a sandy North Shore beach that is usually calm enough for swimming. In winter north swells, waves can be stronger and there can be more shore break, but most of the year the water is comfortable for casual swimming.
In practice, yes. There are no shops or restaurants within an easy walk, and taxis and rideshares are not reliable for short hops on the North Shore. Most guests rent a car for grocery runs, restaurant visits and day trips across the island.
Driving time is usually about 12–15 minutes, depending on traffic and where you park in town. The route follows the North Shore and then drops into Christiansted near the marina and boardwalk.
The closest cluster of restaurants is at Cane Bay, about 10–15 minutes by car, where you will find options ranging from casual beach bars to upscale dining. Christiansted also has many restaurants, cafes and bars within a short drive.
J and I condos are closest to the ocean and offer the best views. Check the Gentle Winds Cond Map above before you book to see the exact location of any GW condo.
The beach itself is public by law, but access through the Gentle Winds property, parking, pool and all on-site amenities are restricted to residents and registered guests.
Gentle Winds Beach Shack
One of the great amenities of this condo community along the Cruzan coast is the Gentle Winds Beach Shack, a.k.a the “Sunny Shack” This is a cozy beach bar & grill located on the beach which served tasty light fare like sandwiches, hot dogs, hamburgers, wraps, quesadillas, etc. It also serves a wide selections of soft drinks, water, beer, and tropical cocktails made to order. The Beach Shack makes for a nice lunch after a morning of swimming, or a cool beer in the late afternoon. You’re free to take your food and drink to eat at the pool, on the beach, in the clubhouse, or take it back to your condo.
Normal working hours of the Sunny Shack are 11:30 am to 5 pm most days during the peak season, and variable hours in off-season.

Great complex with both beach & pool
PROS: beautiful grounds - ideal condo complex because it has BOTH a beautiful pool & gorgeous beach right on site! Having the beach shack bar & grill right on the beach was also SO amazing! Condo is a one minute walk to pool &/or beach- walk right out the patio door and you’re there! You can hear the waves from the screened in porch which was so relaxing. Lots of beach towels to use and a well stocked kitchen with plenty of utensils, plates, pots/pans, glasses, etc. The owner was always quick to reply to any inquiries we had - very dependable. CONS: only minor cons we can think of to mention is that the unit is slightly “tired”/dated & could use some TLC. The master bedroom bed box spring was extremely noisy and when my husband would turn over at night, it would wake me up. The screened in porch was a little small for 4 people but we still managed to have fun out there & enjoy the beach waves. We usually only spent the evenings inside the unit, so none of these were a big deal for us.
