Estate Judith’s Fancy is a district of Saint Croix, roughly 4 miles northwest of Christiansted. It is located on a previous sugarcane plantation whose great house was built in 1733. Its surviving 3.6 acres property was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
Judith’s Fancy is very rich in history, stretching back to the 1650′s, when it was the site of the French government during their rule of St. Croix. It is now a much sought-after location for stately homes and vacation homes to rent.
Origin of the name “Judith’s Fancy”
According to the records, the name Judith’s Fancy comes from Pieter Heyliger, who was an extensive land owner during the 18th century, named the estate Judith’s Fancy after his daughter. Judith’s Fancy Beach St. Croix is located on the North Shore of the island, inside Judith’s Fancy Quarters past the guard gate. Not really good for swimming, but it lots coral and shells to rummage through. Sometimes frequented by surfers, but be careful because it is shallow and has reefs. Some good snorkeling here because of the reef, but only if the tide is down.
